10 security tips for Microsoft Windows XP

0 Conmment

When installing and using MS Windows XP, there are some security practices you should keep in mind.

There are general security tips that apply to all operating systems, of course, but each operating system platform provides its own security challenges. The following tips are tailored to Microsoft Windows XP.

1. Disable dangerous features. Microsoft Windows systems come with a number of features enabled by default that do little or nothing for convenience, but introduce significant security risks. Among these are Autorun, the Guest account, and even Automatic Updates — because letting someone in Redmond, WA decide when changes should be made to your system, when he has no idea what software you’re running and you haven’t tested the updates yet, is a bad idea. Microsoft Windows provides many features that are activated by default and either poorly conceived from a security perspective or, at best, unnecessary for the vast majority of users. Each of these features introduces its own risks, and any that you do not need should be deactivated.

2. Disable unneeded services. In addition to local operating system features, you should disable unneeded services.

3. Employ good email security practices. Make use of some basic email security tips to ensure you do not invite the bad guys to read your email, flood you with spam, and take advantage of you through phishing techniques.

4. Install and maintain malware protection software. Regardless of the reason for it, the fact remains that malware is a significant threat to Microsoft Windows systems, and running one without malware protection is irresponsible. Research your options for antivirus and antispyware protection carefully, and choose well. Don’t let your malware protection software’s signature databases get out of date because the software only protects against the threats it can recognize, and don’t rely on your choice of antivirus software from six years ago because there’s no such thing as a trusted brand.

5. Update more than just MS Windows. In the world of Microsoft Windows, the majority of the software most people run on their computers often comes from third-party vendors without any connection to Microsoft’s own software distribution channels. This means that when you install something like Adobe Photoshop or Mozilla Firefox you have to track security updates for these applications separately from the operating system. Just getting your Microsoft updates every month doesn’t always cover it — sometimes some third party application needs to be updated, too. You need to keep track of what’s installed and whether or not it has received any updates if you want to maintain security for your system, because security goes beyond the core operating system.

6. Research and test your updates. It’s important to keep your system updated so that security vulnerabilities that receive patches from Microsoft and other software vendors will not remain open to exploit. It’s also important, however, to ensure that you research and test your software updates before applying them to a production system. All too often, users and sysadmins discover that untested updates are a cure worse than the disease, as they break functionality, open additional vulnerabilities in the system, and even occasionally undo the benefits of previously applied updates. Others may have tested the updates, or have simply applied them and run into problems, so researching others’ experiences can help you plan for such issues as they arise; testing them yourself by installing them on a test system before doing so on your production system is a next necessary step to ensure that your system in particular will not develop problems as the result of a bad update.

7. Investigate alternatives to your default application choices. Should you be using a Web browser other than Internet Explorer, such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Opera? Is the multiprotocol IM client Pidgin with the OTR encryption plugin a better option for your instant messaging needs — including security — than the native clients for AIM, MSN, Y!M, ICQ, and gTalk? The only way to be sure is to determine your own needs and make an informed decision. Don’t settle for default applications without knowing the consequences of that choice.

8. Use a quality desktop firewall. Desktop firewalls are in many respects applications like any other, but they deserve special mention for MS Windows security. Furthermore, even Windows servers are in effect desktop systems, so don’t let the fact that a given computer is a “server” deter you from installing a good “desktop” firewall application on the system if you can spare the CPU cycles and RAM. On an actual end user desktop system, desktop firewall software is even more important. Relying on the defaults you get when you buy the computer is a good way to get your system compromised without even knowing it. The Windows Firewall provided with MS Windows after Service Pack 2 is certainly better than nothing, but one can almost always do better. Look into alternatives to the Windows Firewall, and select the option that best suits your needs.

9. Research your options before assuming MS Windows XP is what you need. The same principles that apply to applications may also apply to operating systems. Different OSes can provide different security and functionality benefits. Are you really certain that MS Windows XP is the operating system you need? Have you investigated other alternatives? What about MS Windows 2000 or Vista? Have you checked into the possibility of MacOS X, FreeBSD, or Ubuntu Linux for a workstation? What about OpenBSD, OpenSolaris, or OpenVMS for a server?

10. Protect yourself the same way you would with any other operating system. Installing MS Windows XP is only the first step to using it. If you stop there, you’re likely to run afoul of the various security threats roaming the wilds of the Internet. Make sure you take care to configure your system to best protect you against the dangers that lurk around every corner.

Top 10 Windows Vista tips and tricks to increase your gaming Performance

0 Conmment

Although Windows Vista is a great operating system with tons of great features and application, when it comes to gaming, its performance is still lagging behind Windows XP. One of the reasons is that most of the current games are not designed for Windows Vista which utilizes the new DirectX 10 technology. Another reason is that Windows Vista has a lot of activities running in the background that interferes with the gaming resources.

Below I have compiled 10 useful Windows Vista tips and tricks to help you improve your gaming performance.
1) Upgrade your hardware

This includes the RAM, CPU and graphics card. For gaming in Vista, make sure that you own a dual core CPU, 2 GB RAM and a DirectX 10 compliant graphics card.

2) Disable System Restore

Vista’s System Restore helps you to backup your files and provide a restoration in the event that the OS crash. Although a useful feature, it can slow down your system to a great extent. To disable it, click on Start -> Control Panel -> System and Maintenance -> System and remove the tick next to any drives that you have protected.

3) Turn off hibernation

If you don’t use the hibernation feature, you can disable it and recover around a gigabyte of hard disk space. To do this, open up “Run” and type “powercfg - H off”

4) Disable the Sidebar

While this is a great eye-candy, it takes up a lot of resources. To disable the sidebar, open Control Panel -> Windows Sidebar Properties. Uncheck the “Start Sidebar When Windows Start”.

5) Move swap file to another drive/partition

Swap file is a temporary file used to store data for future use. If you have another drive, you can speed up Vista a bit by moving the swap file to that drive. Or if you are using only one drive, you can set up a partition to store your swap file.

- Click on Start -> Control Panel -> System and Maintenance -> System

- Choose Advanced system settings from the top left hands side

- Make sure that the Advanced tab is selected

- In the Performance section click Settings

- Click on the Advanced tab

- In the Virtual Memory section click Change

- Uncheck “Automatically manage paging file sizes for all drives”

- Click on the partition you want to use as a swap partition, select Custom Size, and set the new sizes of your swap file. The recommended size is 2.5 times your RAM size, and my choice is to set the Initial Size and Maximum Size values equal, to get a fixed size swap file.

- Click on the primary partition, check “No paging file” and click Set. This is to prevent Vista from placing a swap file on your primary partition.

- Restart the computer

6) Add 3D sound

The DirectX 10 architecture changed the ways sound is processed in gaming. If you are playing Windows XP games that use hardware 3D audio effects, most likely you will not hear any sound at all. To overcome this, you can use Creative’s ALchemy tool. Download and install the ALchemy tool from Creative website. This tool will pipe any DirectSound calls in Windows XP games to OpenAL to give it a full 3D audio hardware support.

7) Turn off Vista’s Indexing Engine
The Vista’s Indexing Engine is a useful tool that allows you to search for files easily. However during gaming, it is running in the background and takes up resources that affect the gaming performance. To turn it off, go to Control Panel -> Indexing Option. Click Modify -> Show All Locations to remove any drives or folders that you don’t want to be indexed.

8) Change your Startup program

To prevent any unused programs from loading during the boot up process and take up your system resources, you can change your startup program by typing “msconfig” into the Run box. Click the startup tab and uncheck the box next to any software that you don’t want to run during startup.

9) Use Ready Boost

This is a new feature in Vista that uses an external USB flash drive as a cache to store frequently access data. It is said to be able to increase the performance up to 10 times. Insert in a USB 2.0 flash drive into your USB port. In the window that pops up, click on the ReadyBoost tab. Select “use this device”.

10) Disable SuperFetch

Another new feature of Vista that utilizes all your free memory to store frequency accessed data. While it is a good feature, it is actually causing more harm to your game performance. Your game needs a lot of free memory to load maps, process AI and so on, while the SuperFetch is constantly taking up free memory to store data. To disable the SuperFetch, open Run and type “services.msc”. Select “Stop/Disable SuperFetch”, and then reboot the computer.

How to speed up your external USB drives in Windows Vista

0 Conmment

If you’re like me, you’ve probably expanded the storage on your computer by adding an external hard drive or two. I’m not talking about one of those USB thumb drives. I’m referring to the USB connected 80GB+ drives that often require a separate power source.

In my system I store backups and archived data to the external drive, mostly items that I don’t plan to access frequently. That being said, there is no reason why it couldn’t be a little quicker when I am using it. Windows Vista has a little known tweak that will speed up your external USB hard drives and I’m going to show you how to do it.

The trick to improving the external drive’s performance is in something called Write Caching. The PC Guide defines write caching as:

Caching reads from the hard disk and caching writes to the hard disk are similar in some ways, but very different in others. They are the same in their overall objective: to decouple the fast PC from the slow mechanics of the hard disk. The key difference is that a write involves a change to the hard disk, while a read does not.

When write caching is enabled, when the system sends a write to the hard disk, the logic circuit records the write in its much faster cache, and then immediately sends back an acknowledgement to the operating system saying, in essence, “all done!” The rest of the system can then proceed on its merry way without having to sit around waiting for the actuator to position and the disk to spin, and so on. This is called write-back caching, because the data is stored in the cache and only “written back” to the platters later on.

Due to the fact that caching tells the operating system that it is done even though it isn’t, there is always the potential for data loss if power is cut. The screenshots below show the warning that explains the you must use the Safely Remove Hardware feature to disconnect the drive. Failing to do so could cause data loss. It is also recommended to have your computer connected to an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to assist with unexpected power outages.

Now that the education piece is out of the way, here is how to speed up your external USB drives in Windows Vista.

Start by opening the Control Panel, then open Device Manager. Expand Disk Drives and locate your portable drive.

In my example, I’m using a Western Digital 300 GB external drive. Double-click the external drive that you want to adjust to access the properties window.

Once open, click on the Policies tab and select the Optimize for performance radio button. Click Ok to save your changes. You should see a prompt like the one below advising you to reboot.

The settings won’t actually take effect until you reboot your computer. Once the reboot is complete you’re done! Wasn’t that easy?

How to make Windows Vista run faster

0 Conmment

So you are using Windows Vista and feel that its slower than WIndows XP? Then you have come to the right place.

Following tutorial will help you in tweaking your Windows Vista to the max and you’ll feel a significant improvement in your system performance. So without wasting any time lets start:

1. Following is a registry file containing a few registry modifications, which are completely safe and can increase the performance of Windows Vista. Just download the attached ZIP file, extract it and then run the file:

Tweak Windows Vista

Restore Default Settings (Use this file if you want to restore default Windows settings)

2. Right-click on My Computer icon on Desktop and select Properties (or press key + key), click on Advanced system settings link in left side pane (You can also open it by typing sysdm.cpl in RUN or start menu search box and press Enter). Now click on Settings button in Performance section:

Now disable all unnecessary options in Visual Effects tab, you can remain following options enabled according to your requirements:

- Enable desktop composition (If you want to use Windows Aero theme)

- Enable transparent glass (If you want to use transparency in Windows)

- Show preview and filters in folder (If you use Details Pane in Explorer)

- Show thumbnails instead of icons (If you want to show thumbnails in Explorer)

- Show window contents while dragging (If you want windows to show content while moving them)

- Smooth edges of screen fonts (If you want to show smooth fonts)

- Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop (If you want to show shadows under desktop icon labels)

- Use visual styles on windows and buttons (If you want to use Windows Aero or Basic theme.)

3. Open Folder Options and click on View tab:

Now disable following options:

- Display file size information in folder tips.

- Display simple folder view in Navigation pane.

- Hide extensions for known file types.

- Show encrypted or compressed NTFS files in color.

- Show pop-up description for folder and desktop items.

Other options don’t affect the system performance. You can enable/disable them according to your requirements.

4. Type msconfig in RUN or Startmenu search box and press Enter. Now goto Startup tab and deselect the unnecessary entries, which you don’t want to start automatically with Windows, e.g. you can disable VGA driver utility, Sound Card utility, etc to speed up the startup time and to increase system performance.

You can also disable these items using Windows Defender. Open Windows Defender and click on Tools and then click on “Software Explorer“.

5. Open Sound in Control Panel (or type mmsys.cpl in RUN or Startmenu search box and press Enter), goto Sounds tab and select No Sounds in Sound Scheme section. Or you can remain some of your favorite sounds but set Exit Windows, Windows Logoff, Windows Logon and Start Navigation to (None).

6. At last I’ll advise to defrag the HDD regularly, install only necessary software, use the latest drivers and keep your Windows updated.

How to install Windows 7 on a Virtual Machine with VirtualBox

0 Conmment

Earlier this month, Microsoft made the Windows 7 beta available for anyone to download and test drive it. Unless you have a spare computer, it can be somewhat inconvenient to test out new operating systems on your main system. Although it is possible to dual boot Windows 7 with Vista or XP, you may still prefer to install it on a separate machine. VirtualBox is just the separate machine you’ve been looking for, and it’s free.

VirtualBox is a free and open source virtualization program. Essentially, it is like having a complete and separate computer within your computer. You can install any operating system on it, including Windows 7. The latest version of VirtualBox (2.1.2) has support for Windows 7, which makes it very easy and convenient to install.

First, you’ll want to download VirtualBox and install it. VirtualBox is available for multiple platforms: Windows, OS X, Linux, and Solaris. During the installation on a Windows system, you may receive a warning that untested software is being installed. Be sure to click continue when those boxes appear, as essential components for VirtualBox to function properly are being installed.

You’ll also need to download the Windows 7 beta. It is a large file, so it may take quite a while to download depending on your connection. The file you will download is a CD disk image. Fortunately, since you’re going to use it on a virtual machine, you won’t have to actually burn it to a CD to use it.

Once you have VirtualBox installed and you have the Windows 7 beta CD image, you’re ready to create your virtual machine. Launch VirtualBox and create a new machine. Be sure to select Windows 7 as your operating system.

Click Next. On the following screen you will select how much memory you would like the virtual machine to have. I believe the minimum requirement for Windows 7 is 1GB of RAM, so be sure to set it to at least 1024MB.

Click Next. On the following screen you will create a new virtual drive for the system. I would recommend using the default option of a Dynamically expanding storage. This way you won’t use any more disk space (on your main system) than necessary. Since you’re using a dynamically expanding drive, the size of the disk is somewhat arbitrary. You just want to be sure not to make it too small, so set it to 100GB to be safe.

Once you’re done creating the virtual machine, you’ll need to configure it to use the Windows 7 disk image you downloaded. Select your virtual machine, click Settings, and navigate to the CD/DVD-ROM section. Check the Mount CD/DVD Drive checkbox and click the ISO Image File radio button. Then click the folder icon and then browse to where you saved your ISO image and select it.

If you have a multi-core processor, there’s an option you’ll want to enable to speed things up on the virtual machine. Go to the General section and on the Advanced tab enable the Enable VT-x/AMD-V checkbox. This allows VirtualBox to take advantage of machine virtualization capabilities of your processor, and improves the performance of the virtual machine.

You may also want to add sound to the virtual machine as well. Go to the Audio tab, and click the Enable Audio checkbox and select Windows DirectSound for the Host Audio Driver. Once you have the machine configured, click the Start button to turn on the virtual machine.

You should see the Windows 7 installation begin. Just follow all the prompts and install Windows. If you need to get back to your main computer at any time, the hotkey to release control of the virtual machine is the Ctrl key on the right side of your keyboard.

Once you’ve installed Windows 7, you can install the guest additions. The guest additions will provide better video and audio support to the virtual machine. The guest additions also allow you to better integrate the virtual machine with your main system.

To install the guest additions, press the right Ctrl key on your keyboard, go to the Devices menu and select Install Guest Additions

During the guest additions installation, when prompted if you would like to install drivers, click the Install button. Once you’ve installed the guest additions, reboot the virtual machine. Upon rebooting, all of the virtual devices should be working.

Now that you have the guest additions installed, you will be able to share the clipboard, access to files on the main system, and move the cursor seamlessly in and out of the virtual machine. You can press the Right Ctrl-F and see the virtual machine full screen. What a pretty fish!

Have you tried Windows 7 with other free virtualization programs? If so, let us know which ones and what sort of hacks were required to get it to work.

How to boot and install Windows 7 from USB flash drive

0 Conmment

The Windows 7 beta has been released for quite a while now. If you want to follow the crowd and test it in your system, but do not want to burn into a DVD, here is how you can create a bootable USB drive to install Windows 7 on your system.

Format USB flash drive to NTFS format

(For Win XP only. Vista users can directly format the USB drive to NTFS format) In your Windows, go to Control panel -> system -> hardware -> Device manager.

Under the disk drives section, right click on the USB storage drive and select Properties.

Go to the Policies tab, select optimize for performance. Click OK.

Open your Windows Explorer, you should see the USB storage drive in the inventory. Right click and select Format. Select NTFS from the drop down bar. Click Start.

For Windows XP,

Download MBRWizard. Extract the zipped files to your desktop.

Open a command prompt (Start –> Program –> Accessories –> Command Prompt).

cd Desktop/MBRWiz2.0/
MBRWiz /list

Record the USB flash drive disk number

Make the USB drive active.

mbrwiz /disk=X /active=X (X is Disk Number of your USB Drive)

For Windows Vista,

On the Start menu, navigate to the command prompt entry. Right-click and select Run as administrator.

Type

diskpart
list disk

Record the disk number of your USB flash drive.

Select the USB disk.

select disk X (X is the drive number of the USB flash drive)

List the current partition. Record the partition number.

list partition

Select the current partition and make it active.

select partition Y (Y is the partition number of the USB flash drive)
active

Creating bootable USB flash drive
Download Windows 7 iso (32-bit) file to your desktop.

Download and install WinRAR.

Right-click on the Windows 7 iso file and select Extract files. Extract the files to a folder (you can name the folder any name you want, but for illustration purpose, I name it win-7) in your desktop.

In your command prompt, cd to the windows 7 folder.

cd Desktop/win-7 (Change the destination to the folder that you have extracted)
cd boot
bootsect /nt60 X: (X is the drive latter of your USB drive )

Now, copy all the files from the Windows 7 folder to the USB flash drive.

Reboot the computer. Remember to change the first boot device to your USB drive in the BIOS.

You should be able to install Windows 7 from your USB flash drive now.

How To Get Product Key and Install Windows 7 Beta

0 Conmment

Last night I was playing with the Installation of Windows 7 Beta but had no Product Key. This morning found out from LifeHacker the solution to Windows 7 Beta so I wanted to share with you all.

Step 1: Log onto [technet.microsoft.com] by clicking on “Sign in” in the upper right corner with your Microsoft Passport ID. (i.e.: Hotmail, etc.)

Step 2: Copy (don’t CLICK!) one of the links below to the address bar and press Enter.

32-Bit key: [www.microsoft.com] (Copy and Paste!)

64-bit key: [www.microsoft.com] (Copy and Paste!)

Tip: You can use the 64-bit during a 32-bit installation and a 32-bit key during a 64-bit installation. (It seems that getting a 64-bit key is faster!)

Step 3: If you receive an error, just press CTRL+ F5 (non-cache reload) to refresh. (I had to refresh more than 10 times before I received the key), if you’re being redirected then you didn’t follow the steps 1 and 2 correctly!

If you followed the steps correct you should see your key (depending on your version it could also say Windows 7 Beta 32-bit Product Key).

How To Install Windows 7 Beta Without Partition Or OS Upgrade

0 Conmment

I noticed on Twitter many people use their PC’s, Mac’s and Laptops to install Windows 7 Beta. There is two things people should consider when Installing Windows 7.

If you are curious how Windows 7 Beta looks and want to just test it I would suggest to download VirtualBox. With VirtualBox you can install W7B without making partition on your pc or waisting time finding your old PC/MAC.

I ran Windows 7 Beta on VB last night and I was very pleased with the speed and stability.

But if you are heavy-duty tech guy/girl and want to explore the true speed, stability and test Windows 7 Beta the way it will work after August 2009 then my suggestion is to do dual boot. Create partition and just run the ISO.

Windows 2008 R2 Server Review and Download Link

0 Conmment

Windows 7 Beta release is out but what about Windows 2008 Server (RS2 Beta) is it going to lean more toward Vista or Windows 7? Read the review. Download link is at the bottom of the text in case you want to test Windows 2008 Server.

Web Application Platform

Windows Server 2008 R2 includes many improvements that make this release the most robust Windows Server application platform yet. These improvements comprise new features in IIS 7.0, as well as other areas of Windows Server 2008 R2, to help applications run faster while using fewer system resources. The improved features also combine to help reduce the effort to administer and support Windows Server–based applications as well as improve availability, reliability, and scalability.

Improvements to IIS and the Windows Web platform which are included in Windows Server 2008 R2 include: reduced effort to administer and support Web-based applications, enhanced security for Web-based applications, improved file-transfer services, the ability to extend the functionality and features for Web-based applications, and improved availability and performance for Web-based applications and services.

Enabling Server and Desktop Virtualization

Virtualization is a major part of today’s data centers. The operating efficiencies offered by virtualization allow organizations to dramatically reduce operational effort and power consumption. Windows Server 2008 R2 provides the following virtualization types: Client and Server virtualization provided by Hyper-V and Presentation virtualization with Remote Desktop Services. Hyper-V virtualizes the system resources of a physical computer allowing you to provide a virtualized environment for operating systems and applications. Remote Desktop Services (formally known as Terminal Services) virtualizes a processing environment and isolates the processing from the graphics and I/O, making it possible to run an application in one location but have it be controlled in another. Presentation virtualization allows users to run a single application, or a complete desktop offering multiple applications.

Improving Power Management and Streamlining Management

The ongoing management of servers in the data center is one of the most time-consuming tasks facing IT professionals today. Any management strategy you deploy must support the management of both your physical and virtual environments. To help with this problem, Windows Server 2008 R2 has new features to reduce the ongoing management of Windows Server 2008 R2 and to reduce the administrative effort for common day-to-day operational tasks. And these administrative tasks can be performed on the server or remotely.

With the proliferation of physical computers in data centers, power consumption is of paramount importance. In addition to the cost-saving associated with reducing power consumption, many data centers are constrained by the number of computers they can support in their data center by the actual power available to the data center. Therefore reducing your power consumption also allows you to support more physical computers while using the same amount of power, or less power, than before.

Scalability and Reliability

Windows Server 2008 R2 is capable of unprecedented workload size, dynamic scalability, and across-the-board availability and reliability. A host of new and updated features will be available, including leveraging sophisticated CPU architectures, increased operating system componentization, and improved performance and scalability for applications and services.

Windows Server 2008 R2 is the first Windows operating system to be offered for only 64-bit processors. And Windows Server 2008 R2 can now support up to 256 logical processor cores for a single operating system instance, including enhancements in Hyper-V virtual machines which are able to address up to 32 logical cores in a single VM. These improvements not only guarantee more bang for your server hardware buck, but also offer better reliability with fewer locks and greater parallelism.

Making the Experience Better Together with Windows 7

Windows Server 2008 R2 has many features that are designed to specifically work with client computers running Windows 7, including simplifying remote connectivity for corporate computers by using the DirectAccess feature, Secured remote connectivity for private and public computers by using a combination of the Remote Workspace, Presentation Virtualization, and Remote Desktop Services Gateway features, and Improved performance for branch offices by using the BranchCache feature.

There are two ways I would recommend to dual boot your Windows 7 with an operating system such as XP or Windows Vista.

The easy way to dual boot is to download VirtualBox which allows you to be on your operating system as well as boot Windows 7 over without any real technical skills.

The other way to dual boot windows 7 is to make another partition on your PC and install Windows 7. You can read How to Dual Boot Windows 7 here by LifeHacker

How to repair your corrupt word file with WordRepair

1 Conmment

Have you ever received an error report while trying to open a Word file? It’s really like a nightmare, especially if that file contains contains your huge amount of data/info. However, this article will show you how to repair it free by WordRepair software.

Sometimes you composed a Word document and saved it in your HDD, or received a DOC file; but for any reason, while trying to open it for reading or editing, you got an error report that you couldn’t access that file. Or even you could open it, but its content’s illegible strings. If that file only contains unimportant data, you can just delete it and compose a new one. If not, however, you can’t ignore it; then you will need WordRepair’s help.

WordRepair is a free program which restores broken Word documents. It works with files made by Microsoft Word 6.0; Word 95, 97, 2000, XP & 2003. It doesn’t require installing, can be saved in anywhere and can be used quickly and easily. You can download it absolutely free here. After downloading, click downloaded file to use immediately without installing, then WordRepair’s main interface will appear.

Now you’re ready to fix broken DOC files. At program’s main interface, click “Repair/Open” button and search for files which you want to mend. Although all files in the folder can be seen, you’re only allowed to choose a DOC file. The chosen file’s content will be seen at main interface. Now, the first step - restoring broken file’s content - completed. But you can’t edit now. Click “Save” button to save restored content before editing.

However, one of WordRepair’s weakness is saving restored file under rich-text (.rtf) format. Therefore, the former file’s format - drawings, pictures, tables, etc. - will be lost in restoring process. It probably makes you not satisfied, if your file has many drawings and pictures. But it’s important that you restored broken file’s content instead of re-composing it, especially if its content is essential.
