“ | Of all the early-music specialist conductors, Christopher Hogwood seems to have made the most successful transition to playing music of other periods. This is because, at least so far, he has basically limited himself to performing contemporary works that share a similar aesthetic to that of the Baroque and Classical era pieces for which he is best known. Martinu is a perfect example, and indeed Hogwood has become one of the composer's most persuasive and dedicated advocates. It's a wise choice, because he wrote a great deal of music in a wide variety of forms, much of it neglected, and most of it distinctive in tone and of high quality. This release was the first Martinu disc that Hogwood recorded, and it's excellent. The playing of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra is generally superb, despite the annoyingly clicking keys of the oboes. Hogwood has chosen a generous program, ranging from the jazzy Le revue de cuisine, with its riotous Charleston, to the alternately brooding and magical Toccata e due canzone, one of Martinu's last and greatest works in his baroque manner. Indeed, this disc makes an ideal introduction to one of the most appealing and purely enjoyable composers of the first half of the 20th century. David Hurwitz | ” |
